Domestic workers over 60 years to get employment contracts renewed

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has announced that domestic workers aged over 60 years will be allowed to get their employment contracts renewed under three conditions.

“The MOHRE’s step comes as part of its keenness to meet the needs of the UAE employers and families who wish to keep their domestic workers for longer years and believe that their performance has not been affected by age”, said Khalil Khouri, Assistant Undersecretary for Domestic Workers’ Affairs at MOHRE.

To get their employment contracts renewed, domestic workers over 60 years should first be physically fit under a medical certificate issued by the official government authorities, he said. The second condition necessitates their employers to bear the entire actual financial costs of their medical treatment in the UAE, while the third condition necessitates an official approval to be obtained from the other competent bodies, allowing the continuation of their residency visa in the UAE, he added.

Khouri pointed out that contracts for the targeted categories are renewed as per the procedures in place to renew contracts except for workers and sailors, who require special approval from the MOHRE over and above the above-mentioned three conditions. The exception is made in view of the nature of work of these two categories, he added.

Domestic workers include housemaid, private sailor, watchman and security guard, household shepherd, household horse groomer, household falcon carer and trainer, domestic laborer, housekeeper, babysitter, household farmer, private coach, private nurse, private teacher, private PRO, private agriculture engineer and family chauffeur.

Khouri explained that new work permits for domestic workers over  60 years of age will be issued only to those who are already hired in the UAE, provided that no more than three months have elapsed since their employment contracts expired, noting that the period is calculated from the date of expiry of the employment contract and the date of entering into a new contract with an employer or a family other than that the domestic worker previously worked for.

The TADBEER service centers provide all services related to domestic workers. These include opening a file for customers, taking out, renewing and cancelling employment contracts, receiving and withdrawing reports on discontinued work and finalizing all the work related to completing domestic workers’ documents such as medical check-up, health insurance, Emirates ID and residence visa.

They also include receiving domestic workers upon their arrival in the UAE and providing accommodation to them before they move to their workplace. Other services include raising the awareness of domestic workers, training them to ensure a balanced working relationship between both parties through a dedicated support center in each service center and familiarizing customers with the nationalities and professions of domestic workers allowed to be recruited.

The TADBEER app, which is available on the App Store and Google Play Store, provides many services, particularly those related to the service packages offered by the TADBEER centers, these being the traditional package, which provides the service of hiring a domestic worker from outside the UAE for a contractual period of two years, the temporary package, which provides a domestic worker under TADBEER sponsorship to work for a contractual period during which he will not be allowed to be transferred as a resident worker for his employer.

The test package provides a domestic worker under TADBEER sponsorship for a contractual period of six months, after which the worker is allowed to be transferred as a resident domestic worker registered in the employer’s file, subject to the consent of the concerned parties, while the flexible package provides a domestic worker under TADBEER sponsorship for work on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis.
