UAE to be next chair of Abu Dhabi Dialogue

The senior officials of the competent authorities; that are concerned with the working files of the member states, concluded their meetings in Dubai today (Tuesday) by declaring that UAE is unanimously elected to head Abu Dhabi Dialogue (ADD) during its next two-year term, for the second time.

Dr Omar Al Nuaimi, Assistant Undersecretary for International Relations and Communications at MOHRE said that: “electing UAE’S to be next chair of Abu Dhabi Dialogue stands as a testimony of the UAE’s high standing under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the State, among the receiving and sending member states of contractual labour. It also emphasizes the confidence of these states in the UAE’s capability to lead the Dialogue” in order to promote the mutual development benefits of the temporary contractual labour mobility among these states”.

Al Nuaimi added: “the UAE; represented by MOHRE, would work in the next term to complement the ADD’s efforts made over the past ten years. For it has played an active role in improving and managing the safe and legal labour mobility in our region; making the ADD one the most significant tracks that is concerned with labour issues”.

He also stressed on "The UAE's efforts, during the next term, are to develop bilateral and multilateral partnerships among the member states. Such efforts will contribute to developing programs and policies that focus on the challenges and requirements of the future of work and respond to its variables according to the specificity of the region."

Al Nuaimi praised the efforts made by Sri Lanka, chair of the current term of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue.

Senior officials, at the Abu Dhabi Dialogue in Dubai, reviewed during their meetings the programs and policies that could improve cross-border mobility of labour, in addition to discussing the use of technology in managing labour recruitment and employment, providing coaching programs and information for labour, certification and recognition of skills, developing of competency standards for domestic workers besides discussing the challenges of the future labour market and reviewing the UN-Women Manual on recruitment and employment, which takes into account the special status of women, with the participation of experts at the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The Assistant Undersecretary for International Relations and Communications at MOHRE emphasizes that "The meetings of the senior officials representing the member states would have a significant and effective role in maximizing the benefits and advantages for contractual labour, employers and the economies of the receiving and sending member states of the temporary contractual labour, as a result of labour mobility; which is the goal that the ADD strives to achieve.

 Chulananda Perera, Secretary, Ministry of Telecommunications, Foreign Employment and Sports, Government of Sri Lanka and Chair-in-Office of the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, praised the events and sessions held for two days.


  

He stressed on the member states’ interest in developing working approaches towards improving the governance of labour mobility through empowering the international organizations, civil society and the private sector and promoting their communications with the governments to assist in exchanging the views and proposals on relevant best practices. He also welcomed the UAE’s chairpersonship of the next term.
